New Zealand offers assistance to CARICOM in small ruminants production

(l) Ms. Pearce in discussion with senior executives of CARDI at its Headquarters in St Augustine, Trinidad

On 26th June, 2014, CARDI received a visit from Ms. Kathleen Pearce, Deputy Director, Global Bilateral Division of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, New Zealand. At that meeting, Ms. Pearce met with a senior CARDI team, with officials from CARICOM and FAO, Barbados joining on a GoTo Meeting hook up.

Ms. Pearce’s visit to the CARICOM Region was premised on the pillars of New Zealand’s development programme in the Caribbean, which includes Renewable Energy (specifically geothermal), Disaster Risk Management and Improving Knowledge and Skills. Under the third pillar, the CARICOM Secretariat specifically requested technical assistance in agriculture. After some discussions between CARICOM Secretariat and the New Zealand Ministry of Primary Industries, the area of small ruminant husbandry and slaughter/meat processing was identified as a viable industry for technical assistance.
