This section will present an overview about good management practices (GMPs) for a sheep and goat farm.
Regionally, it is recognized that small ruminants production has been the mainstay of the farm family and efforts are being made to expand the economic impact and profitability of the sector. Goats and sheep have the capacity to adapt to a wide range of environmental conditions. They are hardy animals that can be kept on marginal land or rough terrain that is unsuitable for other types of livestock. They are well adapted to the climatic conditions of the region. Goats and sheep may be easy prey for predators and must be kept guarded from harm.
As the sector grows, producers have begun to explore new and better ways to help improve their herd / flock management and increase individual production factors and productivity.
This Production Manual is addressing a need in the industry and seizing an opportunity to provide proven, practical and efficient approaches for producers to effectively manage their animals and farms in order to produce a nutritious and high quality product for consumers. The instructions can also be used for self-assessment and/or benchmarking of individual producers.
Supporting this manual is the Information Communication Technology (ICT) Resource covering several aspects of Small Ruminants' Production and Management Systems. Information is configured and uploaded to a MOODLE platform which is currently operational and accessible via website http://csrp.cardi.org. Over the short term the platform will offer certification at varying levels based on competencies developed by studying and applying the information provided.
